About
Hello, my name is Yi Qian. I am a PhD candidate in art education at the University of Victoria's Department of Curriculum and Instruction. I have a background in visual arts, filmmaking and photography. Born in China, I earned my bachelor's degree there before completing my MFA in the US.
My current focus is on exploring the lived experiences of international art students through a combination of academic research and documentary filmmaking.

01. Art Education
I teach digital arts, photography, and filmmaking at both secondary and postsecondary levels. My research in art education examines the lived experiences of international students in visual arts programs to promote pedagogical and curricular transformation towards EDID.
03. Photography
I am familiar with both pre- and post-production photography. I create photographs across documentary, commercial, and experimental genres. While I photograph landscapes, portraits, and still life, I specialize in documenting live events.
ACADEMIC Research
Transition experiences of Asian international (immigrant) students in a Canadian undergraduate visual arts program
This research will explore the transition experiences of new international (immigrant) students in an undergraduate visual arts program in Western Canada. I will recruit participants originally from China or other Asian countries where art education systems differ from those in Western settings. By framing the research through Asian critical theory (AsianCrit), which evolved from critical race theory (CRT), I aim to amplify the voices of my participants, who are recognized as equity-deserving groups within the Canadian higher education context. Rather than focusing on participants’ studio practices and studies within their program, I will examine how their experiences can inform the EDID effort in art education.
02. Filmmaking
I have experience working as a cinematographer, director of photography, and producer. I specialize in both location and studio film shooting. In addition, my post-production techniques include editing, colour and sound design, and visual effects.
04. Graphic and Motion Graphic Design
I have experience creating still and moving promotional and branding materials, including posters, websites, presentations, and advertising videos. I can also do typography for digital and print books.
